Wireless pitches up content for baseball

BRISTOL, Conn.-With Major League Baseball’s spring training winding down, two wireless players are gearing up to bring baseball content to their subscribers in time for opening day.

Mobile virtual network operator Mobile ESPN L.L.C. announced a suite of content focused on the 2006 baseball season. The offering will allow subscribers to access personalized text and video coverage of their favorite team and players. Subscribers also will have mobile access to their ESPN.com fantasy baseball team information.

Those features are in addition to the MVNO’s other 2006 baseball season content, including game status information and real-time scores for all games; game stats, box scores, play-by-play details and game recaps; and video highlight clips of ESPN telecasts.

Mobile ESPN, which runs on Sprint Nextel Corp.’s CDMA network, launched service earlier this year.

Verizon Wireless also highlighted its baseball-themed content in time for Monday’s opening day, including games such as Derek Jeter Pro Baseball 3D available to VCast subscribers; news and scores from sports networks available to Mobile Web 2.0 subscribers; text alerts from MLB.com for $4 per month and automatic score change and summary alerts charged at standard text message rates; video highlights available to VCast subscribers; and baseball-themed wallpapers and ringtones.

In addition, the carrier said it is sponsoring 14 professional baseball teams this season and will offer a variety of contests, charitable donations and player appearances at company stores in conjunction with the sponsorships.
