CHINA

Alcatel Corp. deployed its Mobile Next Generation Network in China for Zhejiang Mobile, a subsidiary of China Mobile. Alcatel said its Mobile NGN was implemented by its Chinese company, Alcatel Shanghai Bell, and will help Zhejiang Mobile improve quality of service and reduce network operation and maintenance costs. In addition, Alcatel said that the core of the solution is the Alcatel 5020 Wireless Call Server, which controls distributed media gateways and manages voice and data sessions.

TAIWAN

WiQuest Communications Inc., a fabless semiconductor company focused on ultra-wideband wireless solutions, opened an international customer development and sales support center in Taipei, Taiwan.

UNITED KINGDOM

A new handset from Toshiba Corp. will include exclusive content from U.K. pop group Oasis. Oasis expects to debut the video for its new single “Let There Be Love” on the Toshiba 803 handset, set to launch later this month on Vodafone’s network. The phone’s Secure Digital memory card also will include five exclusive audio and video tracks recorded at a concert in July in Manchester.

AUSTRIA

Austrian mobile operator Tele.ring signed an agreement with Andrew Corp. to use its Optum network planning and design tool. Tele.ring will use the product in its GSM and UMTS networks in Austria. Andrew said its Optum tool automatically finds the optimal radio network configuration for an operator-the right mix of power levels, antenna type, direction and tilt-to produce the best coverage, capacity and quality for minimum cost.

MEXICO

U.S. Starcom Inc. teamed up with Zamia Group L.L.C. to distribute Latino-focused ringtones and other mobile digital entertainment in Mexico and the United States. The digital content, distributed under Zamia’s Sabormobil brand, will be marketed via advertisements on phone cards, flyers, posters, Web sites and other media and sold using premium text messaging.
