ESPOO, Finland-Nokia Corp. is set to deploy its High-Speed Downlink Packet Access solution in Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom after signing a deal with T-Mobile International AG. The technology will give T-Mobile’s customers data speeds up of 1 to 2 megabits per second.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Deploying the Nokia leading-edge HSDPA solution will enable us to offer true mobile broadband access and new services to our customers,” said Joachim Horn, technical director at T-Mobile Germany and head of the international planning and engineering leadership team.
“We will start the rollout of HSDPA in Germany in 2006 and then extend it to the Netherlands and the United Kingdom,” he said.
T-Mobile said it serves about 80 million customers in nine markets.
In a separate deal, Nokia won a contract to supply a W-CDMA network and network management solution to 3 Ireland, which launched its third-generation network in late July in Ireland.
The deal marks a new country entry for Nokia with the Hutchison Whampoa Group Ltd., which has about 8 million customers worldwide and holds 3G licenses in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom. 3 Ireland offers national coverage through a nationwide roaming agreement with Vodafone Ireland on its GSM network. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
