TOKYO-Japanese wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo Inc. reported a 22-percent jump in its quarterly net income to $1.8 billion. The carrier also saw a 19.2-percent pop in the number of its FOMA third-generation subscribers to 13.7 million.

“Going forward, we are committed to continuing our efforts to strengthen our core business, reduce costs and secure new revenues sources so that we can react to the rapidly changing market environment and maximize our enterprise value,” said Masao Nakamura, the carrier’s president and chief executive officer.

Although DoCoMo saw a rise in its net income, the carrier’s operating revenues fell 2.8 percent over the same quarter last year. DoCoMo ended the quarter with 49 million total subscribers and a churn rate of 0.8 percent-a record for the carrier.
