WASHINGTON-Half of U.S. wireless users expect to conduct three-quarters of their calls over wireless by 2010, up from 10 percent today, according to new research from ForceNine Consulting and SMS.ac.
Wireless users who use wireless for at least 75 percent of their e-mail and short messaging are expected to grow from 3.7 percent today to 14 percent in 2010, said the report. According to the report, women are more likely than men to migrate the majority of their voice traffic to wireless, although both men and women expect to increase wireless data usage at the same rate.
“There has been significant discussion of the percent of Americans that have cut the cord. However, we often lose sight of the fact that cutting the cord is a natural extension of voice traffic gradually moving from wired to wireless networks,” said Andrew Roscoe, partner with ForceNine Consulting and lead analyst on the study. “Consumers may or may not be comfortable in completely cutting the wireline cord, but it is clear that they intend for the vast majority of their traffic to be wireless.
“Wireline phones may be increasingly relegated to a safety or backup function. Ironically, this was the role of wireless for consumers in its early years,” said Roscoe.
