OFDM has high-speed advantage but will be just part of 4G evolution

ADDISON, Texas-OFDM-based solutions could have a leg up in the race for fourth-generation dominance against CDMA2000 and W-CDMA protocols due to the growing use of streaming media and other high-speed applications, according to a report from Alexander Resources.

However, while OFDM and MIMO-OFDM have advantages as the industry moves to higher speeds, vendors may not switch to the technology for years because CDMA2000 and W-CDMA still have a long evolution path, said the report, “Hard Numbers and Experts’ Insights on Migration to 4G Wireless Technology.”

The report also found that OFDM has inherent advantages, but migration is only warranted at high data rates and that many CDMA vendors are implementing OFDM solutions in addition to supporting and evolving CDMA solutions.
