Microsoft uses Sirf chipset in mapping software

SAN JOSE, Calif.-Sirf Technology Holdings Inc. said it integrated its global positioning system technology with Microsoft Corp.’s first GPS hardware device.

The company’s GPS Locator is combined with the latest version of Microsoft Streets & Trips 2005, a travel and mapping software product covering the United States and Canada. Sirf’s GPS chipset provides information on location, speed and heading, said the company.

“GPS-based location is adding a new dimension to many of our customers’ lives. Sirf’s market-leading GPS technology allows drivers to extend Streets & Trips 2005 from a route-planning tool into a real-time driving assistant,” said Danielle Damasius, product manager at Microsoft. “Sirf’s GPS technology makes many of the features possible because it delivers accurate location, allowing drivers to see exactly where they are at all times.”
