Siemens offers PTT handset, Motorola releases Ferrari-inspired phone

Siemens AG and Motorola Inc. made handset news Wednesday.

Siemens’ new CX70 mobile phone features “push and talk” (PaT) walkie-talkie functionality based on open specifications.

PaT is based on the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), a platform that is also being used for future multimedia services, including video transmission, instant messaging and virtual reality applications.

“We don’t want any proprietary solutions and also employ open standards for Push and Talk,” explained Lothar Pauly, member of the board of Siemens’ mobile communication division. “Only with complete interoperability will we be able to develop the promising potential of this new service to the full.”

In other handset news, Motorola released the Pininfarina Limited Edition Motorola i833 handset, designed by Pininfarina, the company behind Ferrari and Maserati cars.

“Just as a Ferrari vehicle is as much about performance as it is about design, so too is this phone more than just a great design-it’s loaded with advanced technological features,” said Rey More, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola’s iDEN subscriber group. The phone is expected to become available in the fourth quarter.
