Lucent, Novatel announce 3G agreement with KPN, E-Plus

SAN DIEGO-Lucent Technologies Inc. and Novatel Wireless announced another third-generation win in the European arena. Lucent and Novatel will supply KPN in the Netherlands and its German subsidiary, E-Plus, with UMTS PC card modems for their 3G deployments.

Under the multimillion-dollar agreement, the two U.S. vendors will supply the 3G cards to enable KPN and E-Plus to offer customers enhanced services such as streaming video and audio and secure mobile access to e-mail with large attachments.

KPN last week said it will roll out 3G services in July with the first offerings available only to wirelessly enabled laptop users. The carrier will begin 3G services on handsets in September.
