IPWireless technology used in U.K. broadband network

HONG KONG-Hong Kong-based PCCW Ltd. launched a wireless broadband network in the United Kingdom’s Thames Valley region using IPWireless technology in the 3.4 GHz band. PCCW’s UK Broadband subsidiary is offering Netvigator high-speed wireless service to residential and business customers in the area west of London starting at $32 a month.

IPWireless said the service uses UMTS TDD technology and gives users always-on access to the Internet. Subscribers have an initial choice of a 512 kilobits per second service or a 1 megabit per second service.

UK Broadband owns a nationwide United Kingdom and Northern Ireland contiguous 3.4 GHz licensee for wireless broadband. The carrier is planning a nationwide rollout for the new service.

IPWireless technology is reportedly being trialled by U.S. carrier Nextel Communications Inc.
