CDG says worldwide cdma2000 subscriber base tops 50 million

COSTA MESA, Calif.-The cdma2000 global subscriber base surpassed 50 million in May, according to the CDMA Development Group. There are currently 53 commercial cdma2000 networks in 29 countries and 17 more networks are scheduled to be deployed later this year, according to the CDG. The group also said cmda2000 subscribers make up more than 99 percent of the total 3G market.

Asia is the largest market for cdma2000 with nearly 30 million subscribers, and operator KDDI leads in subscriber growth there, adding an average of 600,000 cdma2000 subscribers per month and expecting 90 percent of its customers to migrate to its cdma2000 network by March 2004. Meanwhile, North America has more than 20 million users and Latin America has deployed 19 commercial networks in 12 countries.
