Evans Data releases security survey

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.-Evans Data Corp. released its Wireless Development Survey 2003 Volume 1, which includes research on what technologies are being used to secure wireless local area networks, intentions for LAN technology, Web services development and deployment and brands likely to be supported first.

The survey found Bluetooth network security mechanisms are divided with Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) protecting 19 percent, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protecting 17 percent and Wireless application Protocol 2.0 (WAP) covering 16 percent. Meanwhile, security mechanisms in use for 802.11 networks include SSL protecting 21 percent, PKI at 16 percent and user authentication or passwords protecting 15 percent.

“As wireless continues to gain market momentum and Wi-Fi hot spots crop up across the country it logically follows that security on these networks must become a priority,” explained Chris Priemesberger, an analyst at Evans Data. “But, though there are no clear leaders yet, SSL seems to be establishing itself as the front runner for now. … This is because, after eight years of development, PDI architecture has established a reputation as a trusted and reliable method of authentication.”
