Verizon to cuts D.C. jobs

WASHINGTON-Verizon Communications Inc. is set to lay off 665 employees in its Washington, D.C. operations by July, according to an e-mail obtained by the Washington Post.

The message, which was dated April 9, attributed the job cuts to line losses in the company’s local telephone service business due to increased competition from other local phone companies and the wireless industry. A Verizon spokesman added that in the Washington, D.C. market there are more wireless lines from various providers than Verizon has landline accounts.
