Companies announce content deals

STAMFORD, Conn.-Content deals continue to funnel through the pipe, with a range of handset makers, carriers and content companies announcing deals in the area.

First, application provider SmartServ Online Inc. said it scored a major deal with an unnamed global handset maker to include the company’s financial news and data application inside a variety of the manufacturer’s Java-capable phones. SmartServ said the deal marks the start of an ongoing deal with the handset maker to embed a variety of entertainment, sports, weather, finance, news and lottery applications.

In separate news, SmartServ said a New York court ruled it only has to pay about $13,000 to Commonwealth Associates L.P. instead of the $1.8 million sought by Commonwealth.

In other content news, application and platform company Summus Inc. said its photo messaging service available through AT&T Wireless Services Inc. now supports three new phones. Summus’ Snapfish Mobile application, which allows users to share, print and store photos on their phone, is now available on the Panasonic GU87, Nokia 3650 and the Sony Ericsson T306.

Verizon Wireless announced it will offer a new basketball game just in time for March Madness. The FOX Sports On-Court Live Basketball game was developed by gaming company Sorrent and works over Verizon’s BREW application download service.

And finally, mobile virtual network operator Boost Mobile announced it will offer snow reports for ski areas across the country through a new deal with ski information company SnoCountry.
