MTN Uganda set to upgrade network

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa-Mobile network operator MTN Uganda announced it has invested more than US$4 million in a major network upgrade.

Philip Besiimire, MTN’s public relations officer, said the upgrade is being carried out by Ericsson and MTN engineers. The process involves the commissioning of a fourth switch at Stanbic Bank building and the expansion of the prepaid platform.

“It is a deliberate process for MTN to remain up to date with current Ericsson software releases,” Besiimire said.

Robert Hertel, Ericsson project manager added, “MTN is upgrading to the latest software release in line with current Ericsson research and development standards on the prepaid portfolios and also doing a capacity expansion. This will not only enable MTN to offer superior service to its customers, but also enable Ericsson to continue offering technical support comparable to that provided to other markets in the world.”

Francis Kazinduki, MTN chief technical officer, said: “MTN continues to invest in its network each year. This specific upgrade will enable MTN to double network capacity and quality. It will also introduce interesting network management features that will ultimately result in a better service.”
