GSM gives impetus to call centers in Lagos

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa-The arrival of the GSM mobile network operators in Nigeria has been regarded as the impetus behind the sudden increase in telephone call centers in the city of Lagos. A recent survey revealed that the number of telephone center facilities has increased by 100 percent compared with numbers before the GSM launches.

The telephone centers are to be found on most city or town streets and are run from either make-shift dwellings or residential apartments.

The call centers serve a dual purpose for the mobile networks of MTN and Econet in that while call facilities are available on a cost-per-call basis, sales of prepaid cards and vouchers is another revenue stream.
