TOKYO-The Japanese government on Wednesday announced it would allocate additional 1.5 GHz band spectrum for mobile carriers providing second-generation (2G) services. The 1.5 GHz band has been used by taxi operators. As they have shifted from the conventional analog wireless system to a digital wireless system, some parts of the 1.5 GHz spectrum have become vacant.
On the other hand, mobile carriers have been running out of their allocated band due to a mobile-phone boom in Japan. Mobile carriers will be able to provide their 2G mobile services to 3 million new customers using the newly allocated band, the telecom ministry said.
Currently, NTT DoCoMo, J-Phone and Tu-Ka (KDDI Group) are providing mobile services based in the 1.5 GHz band.
