Econet Nigeria to add 800,000 subscribers by December

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa-After a year of operations in Nigeria, Econet announced it intends to have an additional 800,000 subscribers by December. The network operator currently has a subscriber base of 500,000.

Zachary Wazara chief executive of the company, said the addition of 800,000 subscribers would be one of the tasks the company sets for itself going forward into the second year of operation. Wazara said Econet will also begin focusing on consolidating services to ensure that subscribers gain the best possible service and the operator achieves a balance of subscriber growth and network rollout.

“We have helped to reduce the cost of telephony in Nigeria, as well as increased the geographic distribution of telephone lines in the country to over 30 cities,” he said.

Wazara added that a number of challenges, such as the unreliable power supply and interconnect, dog Nigeria’s GSM operators.
