Two groups decide against hosting meetings in Argentina

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina-The Argentine crisis has provoked a change in plans for the CITEL (Comision Interamericana de Telecomunicaciones ) meeting and the postponement of Telecom Americas 2003, both of which were planned to be held in Buenos Aires.

CITEL confirmed that the Argentine government sent a letter to the official organization informing it of the impossibility of hosting the Third Assembly in Buenos Aires. So CITEL has decided it will take place in Washington, and the organization’s new officials will be appointed in United States next August.

In addition, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the government of Argentina have agreed to annul the organization of the fifth exhibition and international forum of the Americas region, which was set to take place 25-28 February, 2003, in Buenos Aires. The ITU will now call the member countries in the region to present their offers with the aim to organize a similar event in 2004 or 2005.
