Econet Nigeria targets Soccer World Cup mania

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa—Mobile network operator Econet Wireless Nigeria announced it will enter a promotion surrounding the 2002 World Cup soccer event. The company is expected to spend about US$260,000 on prizes for its subscribers.

Darlington Mandivenga, general manager of marketing at Econet, said the popular sporting event presents an opportunity to reward customers for their support and loyalty.

Prizes include cars, refrigerators, televisions and six return flights to South Africa.

The promotion is open to all prepaid and contract subscribers with the prerequisite being that the subscriber must purchase US$44 worth of airtime.
