VALLADOLID, Spain—A group of Spanish carriers, banks and payment companies commercially launched an ambitious mobile commerce service that will allow subscribers to use their mobile phones to purchase virtually any product or service, from buying tickets on the Internet to paying for a taxi ride.
“It will allow clients to use the mobile phone to make payments which are habitually made by credit or debit cards, as well as payments of a wide range of other services, such as cinema and theater tickets, recharging of mobile-phone balances or small money transfers,” said Jose Luis Martinez Dalmau, chief executive officer of Mobipay Espana, the mobile payment system.
Amena, Telefonica Moviles and Vodafone, along with payment system companies and several major banks, started offering the service in Valladolid. The service works through USSD messaging technology and requires users to enter personal codes to authorize transactions.
