South Carolina deploys 800 MHz public-safety system

COLUMBIA, S.C.—South Carolina on Thursday celebrated the implementation of a statewide interoperable public-safety communications system in the 800 MHz band.

“This cutting-edge technology will allow South Carolinians equal access to information and services. I am proud our state is able to have this outstanding statewide public-safety system,” said South Carolina Gov. Jim Hodges.

The Palmetto 800 Network being deployed by Motorola Inc. includes interoperability between state, local and federal public-safety agencies plus major utility companies and health-care providers.

Motorola is in the process of a statewide buildout that will include upgrading the equipment for full digital operation. The Palmetto Network is monitored 24 hours a day and has 46 operational sites with 12 more sites planned to support 10,000 mobile and portable radios.
