Chinese province seizes smuggled mobile phones

BEIJING—Last year, customs officers in China’s southern Guangdong province seized 26,000 smuggled mobile phones, 60,000 batteries and 28,000 battery chargers.

A total of 671 smuggling cases involving 35.52 million yuan (US$4.29 million) were cracked last year, an increase of 102 percent and 143 percent respectively over 2000. The biggest case came to light in August and involved 939 mobile phones and parts valued at 2.07 million yuan (US$250,106).
