Portuguese operator completes UMTS call

LISBON, Portugal—Portuguese mobile carrier Optimus and equipment vendor Nortel Networks have completed live calls using Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) technology, according to a statement.

Nortel Networks said both companies made the calls with a form factor terminal in Porto, northern Portugal, using Nortel’s equipment that included the core network, Internet base transceiver stations and Internet radio network controller.
