Vodafone opens Beijing representative office

BEIJING—U.K.-based Vodafone opened a representative office in Beijing on 9 November. Foreign operators must have a representative office for three years before they can set up a joint venture with a Chinese carrier after China’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). Vodafone wants to substantially increase its investment in China once legal hurdles are cleared.

In October 2000, Vodafone took a 2.1-percent stake in China Telecom (HK), which is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
