India reduces mobile-phone charges

NEW DELHI, India-State-owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) announced it has reduced the tariffs for its cellular service, known as Dolphin, and come up with a special package for corporate mobile clients. The move comes as part of MTNL’s efforts to beat off competition from private operators.

The monthly line rental rates for the Dolphin service under the new tariff will be the same as that for fixed telephony, according to an official statement.

The entry of state-owned MTNL into the market has seen a sizeable drop in mobile telephony charges, with the private players forced to offer new incentives to retain and attract new clients.

Dolphin’s new package is also set to attract corporate clients with additional incentives. The mobile service will provide free roaming between the capital Delhi and Bombay at no extra charge. MTNL is also proposing to extend this service to neighboring areas. Furthermore, under the terms of the new package, a minimum monthly airtime commitment will not be required from users.
