Flextronics signs agreement to make phones for Siemens

KARLSKRONA, Sweden-Flextronics International Ltd. signed an agreement with Siemens Information and Mobile Communications Group to manufacture approximately 33 million mobile telephones for Siemens by the end of 2003.

In its attempt to boost handset production, Siemens said it also will increase handset production capacity in three of its manufacturing facilities and double production at its Shanghai, China, plant.

“By outsourcing a portion of our cell-phone production, we can react more quickly to market conditions and get our products to market with greater speed,” said Rudi Lamprecht, president of Siemens Information and Communications Mobile. “In addition, we can decrease the amount of capital we spend for production and thereby lower our overall invested capital.”
