WASHINGTON-The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement, clearing the way for research to begin on whether radio-frequency emissions from wireless phones pose any health risk.
Under the agreement, the FDA will review research, identity the scientific questions which merit attention, propose research to address those questions and provide detailed recommendations on the conduct of the studies. CTIA, which said it will fund approved studies, then will issue requests for proposals for the studies from third parties interested in conducting research.
“The wireless industry is committed to consumer safety and to addressing concerns the public might have about wireless phones,” said Tom Wheeler, president and chief executive officer of CTIA. “While the vast body of scientific evidence indicates that there are no adverse health effects from the use of wireless phones, we are proud to be working with the FDA on research that will compliment research presently under way globally, as well as augment the wireless industry-funded research begun seven years ago.”
