MINNEAPOLIS-ADC Telecommunications Inc. announced it received two new contracts to provide its NewNet OTAserver over-the-air activation and SMserver short message technologies to regional wireless operators in North and South America.
Cellular One, headquartered in Hattiesburg, Miss., and Global Telecom, operating in the Brazilian states of Parana and Santa Catarina, purchased the services from ADC.
“The key for us was the robust over-the-air activation functionality provided by the NewNet OTAserver,” said Rick Jorgenson, president of Cellular One. “The decision to opt for ADC’s NewNet SMserver solution was also based on its proven scalability. We can begin by running the two servers on relatively small platforms and then, as demand for short messaging areas grow, we can scale up effortlessly.”
ADC claims that in benchmark tests its NewNet SMserver delivered a throughput of more than 1 million message delivery attempts per hour on a single computer, which Global Telecom said was a vital factor in its decision to purchase the product.
“We have reached 150,000 subscribers in our first year of operations, and we see the requirement for fast and effective short message handling growing as rapidly as our subscriber base,” commented Amilcar Marques, director of authority relations for Global Telecom. “The company has a potential population reach of 14 million within the areas it serves. With growth opportunities like these, we will be making full use of NewNet technology, which we see as leading the field in short messaging platform capability.”
