Nokia announced an agreement with M1, a mobile and paging service provider, to expand M1’s Global System for Mobile communications system in Singapore. The deal, valued at more than $35 million, increases M1’s investment in its GSM network to more than $240 million.
The deal calls for Nokia to supply a complete range of transmission and base station equipment, including the company’s DX200 Transit Mobile Switching Center and MetroSite high capacity base stations. Nokia will also provide its Artus Unstructured Supplementary Service Data Center offering interactive messaging services, software upgrades and a range of engineering services and training.
“The voice and data traffic in our network is continuing to show strong growth and we have to be a step ahead in providing the required capacity for this growth,” said Neil Montefiore, chief executive officer of M1. “This agreement with Nokia means M1 will continue to offer competitive, advanced services, laying the groundwork for more diverse future applications.”
This most recent expansion by M1 is the company’s seventh and will bring total capacity of its GSM 900 network to around 500,000 subscribers. Nokia has been providing services to M1 since its service launch in 1997.
