INDIAN PAGING MARKET TROUBLED

BANGALORE, India-Posting a negative growth in its subscriber base, India’s paging industry has plunged into a deep crisis. During the last fiscal year the country’s subscriber base shrank by 100,000 subscribers from approximately 900,000 in March 1998 to 800,000 at the end of March 199, indicating a great leap backward for the industry.

The slump is attributed to operators’ prompt actions of disconnecting subscribers who do not pay subscriptions on time. A general economic slowdown and confusion among users about the utility of pagers has added to the woes.
