MILLICOM PREPAID USE CLIMBS

LUXEMBOURG-Millicom International Cellular said it added 360,651 net new cellular subscribers in the first half of 1999, ended June 30, compared with 200,030 network subscriber additions for the same period in 1998.

The company reported 1.75 million cellular subscribers worldwide as of June 30, a 12-month increase of 72 percent. Of those, 987,021 were prepaid customers, representing a 223-percent increase on the 305,639 prepaid customers at the end of June 1998. Prepaid subscribers represent 98 percent of its net new additions and 57 percent of gross reported cellular subscribers.
