BellSouth Wireless Data L.P. said it has added 195 new base stations to its nationwide network during the first half of the year. The effort is part of an ongoing process of expanding BSWD’s Mobitex network to match coverage of existing one-way paging networks, the company said. BSWD said it plans to add a total of 300 new base stations by the end of the year.
ICO Global Communications said it signed its first satellite roaming agreement in the United States, with AT&T Wireless Services Inc., and that its Indonesian partner, PT Indosat, has received full frequency spectrum licenses to operate its ICO ground station. With AT&T, ICO now has 54 roaming agreements in place with network operators worldwide, the company said. The Indonesian ground station, or satellite access node, is the fourth of 12 planned worldwide to receive regulatory authority approval. The frequency license there was issued by the Directorate General for Post and Telecommunications.
Orbcomm Global L.P. announced it signed an agreement with Telital, an Italian maker of cellular and satellite terminals, to develop fixed and mobile subscriber communicators for the Orbcomm low-earth-orbit satellite network. The communicators will be used to transmit and receive data messages from any point on the globe, said Orbcomm. Telital will market the products to industrial users, including oil and gas companies, for monitoring and tracking applications and communications with mobile equipment, like trucks and boats. Telital expects the equipment to be commercially available early next year in Europe, South America and China.
Xypoint Corp. said it has deployed wireless enhanced 911 services to more than
1 million wireless customers. Xypoint’s service routes calls to the appropriate 911 center and provides the 10-digit call-back number and general location of the caller to public safety answering points.
