WASHINGTON-Donald Abelson, assistant U.S. trade representative for industry and communications, was named chief of the FCC’s International Bureau effective July 1.
Abelson received high praise from various members of the Federal Communications Commission when his appointment was announced at last week’s Open Meeting. “Don Abelson is ideally suited for the job. He brings to the International Bureau a wealth of knowledge and years of hands-on experience with international communications issues that will be increasingly important to continued prosperity at home and economic development abroad,” said FCC Chairman William Kennard.
Abelson has served his entire career at USTR working on such issues as the North American Free Trade Agreement, and Japanese and European bilateral trade issues. He has a bachelor’s degree from Sarah Lawrence College and a master’s degree in International Economics from the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University.
