CellNet Data Systems Inc., a fixed-wireless information services provider, signed an agreement with
utility.com, which calls for CellNet to provide network meter reading services to utility.com’s future residential,
commercial and industrial customers in California.
utility.com is an Internet electric company that promises to save
customers up to 15 percent on their current electricity bill by taking advantage of lower-cost off-peak electricity and
analyzing trends in individual customer usage. The company’s interactions with its customers, including provisioning
and billing, occur on the Internet.
According to the contract, CellNet will provide electricity metering information
services priced on a monthly per-meter basis. CellNet’s services include delivery of hourly electricity consumption
data, time-of-use data for utility.com’s Shift and Save program, power outage detection, information management and
meter installation, retrofit and setup services.
“The detailed energy consumption information provided over
CellNet’s networks is essential to customer choice and bill savings,” said Chris King, chief executive officer of
utility.com. “Customers on our Shift & Save program save by avoiding electricity during expensive peak hours,
since off-peak power is so much less expensive.
“Our customers achieve additional savings through detailed
energy analyses made possible by CellNet’s data and that helps reduce total consumption,” continued King.
