MADRID, Spain-Telefonica and Lucent Technologies Inc. announced they signed a
memorandum of understanding that strengthens their relationship by recognizing Lucent as a preferred global supplier
of telecommunications systems to Telefonica.
Lucent said it will provide solutions in such areas as next-generation
data networks and Global System for Mobile communications networks. The companies’ collaboration will encompass
all of the areas where Telefonica is or will operate, including Spain, Latin America and the Mediterranean
region.
Lucent also signed a separate agreement with Telefonica to purchase 50 percent of Telefonica’s share in
Amper-Spain’s largest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment and systems-for $49 million. Lucent said it also
will propose three appointments to the Amper board of directors.
