FORT WORTH, Texas-Motorola Inc. announced it licensed its FLEX protocol decoder chipset to Korean equipment manufacturer Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.
The agreement is expected to speed the transition from POCSAG to FLEX paging technology in the Asian market.
Samsung reportedly will combine the FLEX protocol decoder chipset with its IF/PLL-based, MCU-based, LDI-based and EEPROM-based products.
“The Asian market has embraced the FLEX protocol as a standard for wireless messaging,” said Dr. Daejae Chin, executive vice president and chief executive officer of Samsung. “We view the integration of the FLEX protocol chipset with our Samsung products as the most efficient way to serve our customers while increasing revenue.”
Samsung plans to incorporate the FLEX chipset into its existing microprocessors and radio-frequency chips. The company said it now has all the components necessary for a solution to extend FLEX to various applications.
Samsung manufactures a line of FLEX pagers today, but relied heavily on Motorola to provide the necessary parts.
Now, it can put together its own solution. Furthermore, Samsung now can extend FLEX capabilities to the various other products the company manufacturers.
“We think [Samsung has] the capability of both extending the protocol and incorporating FLEX into a new range of devices,” commented Gavin Bourne, the FLEX marketing director for the FLEX Technology and Systems Division of Motorola’s Messaging Systems Products Group.
