The Federal Communications Commission affirmed a 1997 decision to move Teligent Inc. wireless local loop licenses from the 18 GHz band to the 24 GHz band. Laurence Harris, senior vice president at Teligent, applauded the decision. “Teligent continues to move forward with construction of its local fixed-wireless networks and commercial rollout of its integrated package of communications services-local, long distance, high-speed data, Internet and videoconferencing. And this will bring real choice to customers,” added Harris.
Orbcomm Global L.P. announced that Omnisat, its service licensee in Argentina, was authorized by the government there to provide communications services using Orbcomm’s satellite network. Omnisat has the exclusive right to market Orbcomm services to the 35 million residents of Argentina, said Orbcomm.
InterDigital Communications Corp. received an order valued at $2.3 million through Siemens AG for its UltraPhone wireless local loop systems to be delivered to Telecom Namibia. The order calls for InterDigital to ship product to three different locations in Namibia by September, the company said. As strategic partners, Siemens and InterDigital have been active together in the country located on the southwestern tip of Africa for several years.
Personal communications services provider Omnipoint Communications Inc. signed its 100th international roaming agreement with Tuntex Telecommunications in Taiwan. Omnipoint said its use of Global System for Mobile communications technology gives it far-reaching roaming capabilities. The company’s 60 active roaming deals cover most of Europe and parts of the Middle East, Africa, the Pacific Rim and South America.
