POWERTEL OPENS MALL KIOSK, CARE CENTER

MACON, Ga.-Personal communications services provider Powertel Inc. said it opened its second retail outlet-a full-service, 9-foot by 11-foot kiosk-in the Macon Mall in Macon, Ga.

In addition to selling handsets and calling plans, staff at the kiosk also can activate service and take bill payments, Powertel said.

The Macon Mall location is Powertel’s 31st store in the 12 southeastern states where it is licensed to offer service, and is the company’s first full-service kiosk.

Powertel also announced plans to open a centralized customer service facility in Jacksonville, Fla.

In August, 25,000-square feet of space is scheduled to open, creating about 100 jobs, more than twice the number of people Powertel employs in the area today. The company plans to open another 25,000-square feet in January and have the facility fully staffed by the fall of 1999, said Powertel.

Powertel owns PCS licenses in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina and Tennessee.
