SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico-Puerto Rico Telephone Co. plans to expand its prepaid services offered by its wireless services division, Celulares Telefonica, as well as its paging network from Motorola Inc. to accommodate high-capacity digital paging services.
Brite Voice Systems plans to expand PRTC’s prepaid offering in a contract valued at more than $800,000 as a result of higher than expected growth since the service was launched late last year, said Brite.
“The prepaid wireless service has been tremendously successful in just the short time it has been available,” said PRTC’s president and chief executive officer, Carmen A. Culpeper.
Brite also provides additional services to PRTC under the BriteCare umbrella, including database management, prepaid card production and monitoring system operation, the company said.
Brite also will be updating the voice-dialing service it provides PRTC as part of the overall agreement.
The service allows PRTC cellular phone users to call numbers from a personal directory by speaking the number or name of the person they want to call in either Spanish or English, said Brite.
Motorola’s Paging Systems Group will add a seventh FLEX paging channel to meet increased demand for paging services in Puerto Rico and provide PRTC with 30 Nucleus transmitters according to the companies’ new agreement.
The additional capacity will allow PRTC to add as many as 80,000 new subscribers on the paging system that covers the entire island, said Motorola.
