Northern Telecom Ltd. and Matra Communication launched a joint-venture subsidiary in France. Matra Nortel Communications will provide French customers with one-stop access to a range of integrated solutions, including multimedia products, said the companies. The company is expected to begin operations in May once all legal arrangements are made.

Brightpoint Inc. said it entered a definitive agreement to acquire the business and certain net assets of Function Communications Co. Ltd. The acquisition is expected to close on or before May 15, and is conditional upon the satisfactory completion of due diligence review by Brightpoint and government approval. Function Communications distributes value-added logistics services to the wireless communications industry in Taiwan. The company has supply arrangements with Nokia Corp. and Motorola Inc.

DSC Communications Corp. announced it joined the Universal Wireless Communications Consortium, a trade group that advocates wireless intelligent network service platforms within Interim Standard-41 Time Division Multiple Access-based networks. DSC will participate in two UWC Consortium working groups, including the Global TDMA Forum and the Global WIN Forum. DSC provides a variety of network and subscriber services for the TDMA/WIN environment, including IS-41 Home Location Register and IS-53 services, Authentication Center, and Short Message Service Center.

CommNet Cellular Inc. will split its common stock 5 for 1, said the company. Shareholders will receive four additional shares for each share owned as of April 20, the record date for the split. The payment date is May 7. CommNet said it has about 4.5 million shares outstanding and expects to have about 22.5 million shares outstanding after the split.
