AirTouch Communications Inc. signed a contract with Ultimate Electronics stores nationwide to make AirTouch the exclusive wireless provider in all Audio King, SoundTrack and Ultimate Electronics stores in AirTouch markets, announced the company. Ultimate Electronics operates 31 stores in nine states nationwide under the names Ultimate Electronics in the Southwest, SoundTrack in Colorado and Audio King in the Midwest.
Ameritech Corp. announced a new nationwide consumer service called SecurityLink Paging, which allows customers to receive pages from their home security systems. With the service, customers will be paged if an alarm goes off or if the system is disabled. When a family member enters the deactivation code into the security system wall unit, that unit pages the customer with an alert saying that the security has been turned off and which code was used to do so, thereby identifying which family member has arrived home. Also, the unit will have one button dedicated as a one-touch paging option. When pressed, the unit will page the user with a preprogrammed numeric code, like “59,” the meaning of which is determined between the two parties beforehand (such as “call home” or “everything’s OK”). Ameritech plans to roll out the service in the first quarter.
Teletrac Inc. began its Northeast expansion plan when it launched wireless tracking service in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area. The vehicle location and fleet management services provider says it plans to expand into additional Northeast markets this year, including New York, Philadelphia and Boston. With the addition of the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area, Teletrac now services 10 major U.S. markets and has about 75,000 units in service. Teletrac technology also is being used in Detroit, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Miami and Orlando, Fla.
U S West Communications Inc. announced the Phoenix launch of its personal communications service, branded Access2 Advanced PCS, offering customers “same-number” integration with their home or office phones. Access2 is available throughout the metropolitan Phoenix area.
