LUCENT WILL EQUIP TAIWAN OPERATORS

TAIPEI, Taiwan-Lucent Technologies Inc. said it deployed the initial phase of Taiwan’s first national Global System for Mobile communications 1800 MHz network, connecting networks for KG Telecom and Tuntex Telecom, two of Taiwan’s licensed wireless service providers.

Lucent already has installed more than 350 base stations and four mobile switching centers under a $140 million contract originally signed with KG Telecom and Tuntex Telecom in April. Lucent said the project will be completed in two years.

Recently, KG Telecom and Tuntex Telecom entered into a roaming agreement that allows them to offer their subscribers seamless national coverage.

Earlier this year, the Taiwan government awarded KG Telecom a cellular telephone license covering northern Taiwan and awarded Tuntex Telecom the license covering central and southern Taiwan.
