NORTEL, OMNIPOINT INK HANDSET DEAL

DALLAS-Northern Telecom Inc. signed a three-year supply agreement with Omnipoint Corp. for Nortel’s wireless handsets. The agreement includes Nortel’s PCS 1911 handset, which supports data, voice mail and messaging services.

The handset operates on Global System for Mobile communications networks. Customers using the handset on Omnipoint’s personal communications services network will be able to send and receive text messages as well as identify callers. Customers also will be provided with a Subscriber Identity Module smart card.

The agreement builds on a strategic relationship the companies formed in 1994 under which Omnipoint signed a five-year supply agreement for network equipment and services in the New York major trading area and other potential markets.
