Avic Group International Inc. said it has formed a joint venture partnership with the Hebei Provincial Government in China to develop telecommunications projects in the province of Hebei. The joint venture expands on Avic’s commitment with the Hebei government to build a 70,000 subscriber Global System for Mobile communications cellular telephone network that began operations earlier this year. The joint venture will oversee the operations of the GSM network, the development of a multimedia hybrid fiber-optical coaxial network and other telecommunications projects, Avic noted.
Kansai Digital Phone will use L.M. Ericsson’s AXE switching and radio base station equipment to expand its Personal Digital Cellular mobile telephone system in the Japanese region of Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto. The expanded capacity will be available later this year, the company said. Ericsson values the contract at $52 million. There are more than 19 million cellular subscribers in Japan, and it is estimated that there will be more than 53 million subscribers in Japan by 2000.
Ukrainian Mobile Telecommunications, a consortium including Tele Danmark A/S, was awarded one of three licenses to operate a nationwide Global System for Mobile communications network in Ukraine. The consortium already has established a GSM network in Kiev, which will begin operating in five months upon a mandate by the Ukrainian government. Ukrainian Mobile Communications is owned 51 percent by UKR-Telecom, a state holding company, and 16.33 percent each by Tele Danmark, Deutsche Telekom and PTT Telecom.
L.M. Ericsson said it will deliver and install switching and radio equipment for Croatian Post and Telecommunications to expand its Nordic Mobile Telephone network. Ericsson values the agreement at $22 million. Croatian Post and Telecommunications is the state-owned mobile operator of Croatia. The country’s NMT network has been operating since 1990, Ericsson said.
Guangdong Nortel Telecommunications Switching Equipment Ltd. received orders for DMS-100 switching systems from the Chinese Provincial Telecommunications Administrations of Shaanxi, Jiangxi, Yunnan, Hebei, Henan and the municipality of Chongqing. Nortel values the order at $75 million. The company, a joint venture of Northern Telecom Ltd. and several Chinese companies, is located in Shunde, Guangdong.
Motorola Inc.’s Land Mobile Products Sector agreed to supply its integrated Digital Enhanced Network infrastructure and subscriber equipment to LG Electronics Inc. The equipment will be used in Korea’s nationwide digital trunked radio service, which is expected to be operational this autumn. Initially, plans call for the system to be used for dispatch applications in the transportation industry and for mobile work groups.
