NEW YORK-Millicom International Cellular S.A. acquired a broadband fixed radio license consisting of 168 MHz of frequency within the 3.6 GHz to 4.2 GHz range from Great Universal American Industries Inc.
The company also announced Jonathan Solomon will lead the development of Tele 2 Ltd., the United Kingdom company formed to develop the license.
Tele 2 will trial the system in Reading, England, this summer, the company said. Equipment is being provided by Lucent Technologies Inc. Tele 2 will focus on providing Internet access and communications for bandwidth intensive applications such as high speed data transmission as well as basic telephone services to small business and residential customers, Millicom said.
Millicom said it will seek separate financing for Tele 2 once the trial has been finished.
