BELLSOUTH AGREES TO PAY BANM TO CONNECT INTERCONNECT CALLS

NEW YORK-Under an agreement with BellSouth Corp. that became effective Jan. 1, Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile has become the first cellular carrier doing business in the Carolinas to collect call competition charges from a regional Bell operating company.

The change resulted from the 1996 federal telecommunications law. The agreement permits the two companies to avoid arbitration proceedings before state regulators in Norht and South Carolina and Georgia, where Bell Atlantic offers cellular service.

Several other wireless carriers also are negotiating similar agreements with BellSouth: Alltel Mobile Communications Inc., DCS Communications Corp. and 360
