CABCARD DELIVERS DRIVERS E-MAIL

SAN DIEGO-The OmniTracs satellite system now allows truck drivers to receive personal e-mail messages via the Internet through a prepaid CabCard.

Qualcomm Inc., which owns and operates the OmniTracs system, has aligned with Transcommunications Inc. to create the domestic service.

Transcom first developed the card three years ago as part of a driver retention program for trucking companies. Now, with the CabCard, families can communicate with the driver by using a personal computer or Internet appliance. The e-mail message is sent via the Internet, through Transcom’s Network Service Center, then over OmniTracs’ satellite service to the truck.

OmniTracs’ vehicles with an AS/400 computer platform can receive the e-mail, using Qualcomm’s Eudora Light electronic mail software.

The OmniTracs mobile communication system uses geostationary satellites to transmit two-way data and report truck positions. It is used by many of the country’s largest trucking firms.
