Nexus Telecommunication Systems Ltd. of Givatayim, Israel, announced it has signed an agreement with Academy D.O.O., a Yugoslavian security services company, to deploy Nexus’ automatic vehicle location and tracking system in Yugoslavia. Deployment will begin during second quarter 1997, said Nexus. The first stage of the contract is valued at $7.7 million.

Swiss Telecom is investing $215 million to acquire a 30 percent stake in Sterling Cellular, a joint venture with Essar, a diversified Indian company, to provide Global System for Mobile communications cellular service covering northern India. Swiss Telecom said the investment is part of its strategy to provide additional value to shareholders as European public networks open to competition. The joint venture is particularly strong because of the Delhi GSM license, said Swiss Telecom. Further licenses in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh east and Rajasthan will give Swiss Telecom a dominate market position, the company added.

Electronic components distributor Richardson Electronics Ltd. of Lafox, Ill., announced the opening of a full stocking location in Seoul, Korea. The new office is one of 60 sales locations and one of 19 stocking locations worldwide, said Richardson.

L.M. Ericsson said it has signed a contract with Udmurt Telecom to supply a Global System for Mobile communications cellular network in the Udmurtia Republic, an autonomous republic situated in the southeastern part of the Ural region in Russia. The contract is Ericsson’s first order for a GSM system in Russia and includes mobile switching equipment and radio base stations. The system initially will serve about 3,000 subscribers and will provide services in Izhevsk, the capital city. Ericsson said commercial service is planned to start in the fourth quarter.

Glenayre Technologies Inc. announced the details of contracts with all three of Singapore’s newly licensed private paging operators. Valued at more than $9 million, the contracts include designing and building paging networks to prepare for competition in mobile services that begin April 1. The new systems will allow the operators to introduce advanced numeric, alphanumeric, secretarial and voice messaging services to the Singapore market, said Glenayre. The operators are ST Messaging Pte Ltd., a subsidiary of Singapore Technologies; Hutchison Intrapage Pte Ltd., a joint venture between Intraco Singapore and Hutchison Telecom of Hong Kong; and MobileOne Pte Ltd., a joint venture of Keppel Group, Singapore Press Holdings, Hong Kong Telecom CSL and the United Kingdom’s Cable & Wireless plc. Glenayre’s Asia-Pacific regional support center in Singapore will lead in implementing the turnkey services, which Glenayre expects will be completed this year.
