The South African Police Services announced it has awarded Motorola Inc. and South Africa-based Alcom a contract for a SmartZone UHF two-way radio communications system. Motorola said the system will serve SAPS personnel working in Cape Town and the greater western Cape region. Alcom distributes Motorola two-way radio products and systems throughout South Africa.

Singapore Telecom MobileLink said it has launched its personal communications network service after a $48 million investment in hardware from Northern Telecom. Singapore Telecom is marketing the service alongside all existing cellular services in operation with pricing pitched towards the private user.

DSC Communications Corp. announced it is opening a new manufacturing facility in Costa Rica. Located northwest of the city of San Jose, the facility will support DSC’s manufacturing and testing operations for the global market and bring more than 150 new jobs by the end of 1996, the company said.

Andrew Corp., a communications equipment and services provider, announced it has opened a liaison office in New Delhi, India, to establish a foothold in the country and provide service to its growing customer base there. The Indian government recently granted 36 licenses to 14 Global System for Mobile communications operators.

AirTouch Communications Inc. said its three Japanese cellular ventures, known as the Digital Phone Group, have reached a total of 1 million customers less than two years after beginning service in Tokyo. In 1995, the three ventures, which operate in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, grew 335 percent, adding more than 600,000 customers, AirTouch said.

L.M. Ericsson announced it has signed a Global System for Mobile communications expansion contract with Heilongjiang Posts and Telecommunications Administration in northern China. The capacity of the network will reach 400,000 subscribers after the expansion, which is scheduled to be completed by year-end, Ericsson said.

Hughes Network Systems Inc. and Alcatel Telecommunications of Brazil have been selected by the telephone company of the state of Rio de Janeiro to provide a fixed wireless telephone system for the Campos region of Rio state in Brazil, HNS announced. The agreement calls for 20,000 telephone lines to be installed using HNS’ GMH 2000 cellular system. The initial system will be in operation by this summer, HNS said.

ADSB Telecommunications, closed its consolidation agreement with Belgacom S.A., the national telecommunications operator of Belgium, Ameritech Corp. announced. The closing marks a 49.9 percent stake of Belgacom to ADSB Telecommunications. Of this, Ameritech will hold 35 percent, Tele Danmark, 33 percent, Singapore Telecom, 27 percent and 5 percent will be held by three local Belgian investors.

Tele-Escucha, a paging company based in Guatemala, has purchased paging infrastructure equipment from Glenayre Technologies Inc., Glenayre announced. The company has purchased a GL3000 Wireless Messaging Switch, GL-T8611 VHF Transmitters, GL-C2000 Controllers and network managers from Glenayre, and will use the equipment to expand a nationwide paging system, Glenayre said. Tele-Eschucha plans to expand the system again later this year, adding VHF transmitters to handle a subscriber base that is expected to be more than 30,000.

Nokia Telecommunications has signed an agreement to expand the Global System for Mobile communications network in Henan, China. The project is valued at $30 million and follows an earlier contract signed last October for the initial phase of the Henan network. The initial phase is scheduled to be operational in April; the expansions are scheduled to be online in the fall.
